The Benedictine Way: in the footsteps of St. Benedict across Umbria and Lazio
The Benedictine Way is a tourist itinerary that leads visitors on a voyage to discover the roots of western monasticism and the Catholic culture of Europe, by visiting ten of the most important places in Umbria and Lazio that were inhabited by St. Benedict and his followers. The figure of St. Benedict came to represent an element of unification in a Europe that had always struggled to build a sense of civil, cultural and spiritual identity. His message, which was spread by the many Benedictine communities from the VII century onwards, sustained the “old continent” during the darkest periods in history, and offered a decisive contribution to the construction of modern society, enough for St. Benedict to be given the title Patron Saint of Europe (Pacis Nuntius - Paul VI, 24 October 1964).

St.Benedict from the middle ages to the present dayThe historical and cultural impact of the figure of St. Benedict and his Order, along with the work that has been carried on through the centuries in the various monasteries and abbeys throughout Europe, still today represents an example of how knowledge and faith can be spread through all levels of society. This section contains in-depth analysis and reflection on monasticism and the “Benedictine” culture in Europe (Through Faith and Culture) and on the world of the Benedictine abbeys, exploring their common language of colours and architectural forms, the organisation of space for prayer or work and their relationship with the surrounding areas (the Benedictine monasteries). |
