Local specialities and dishes include: Sabine bread, black and white truffles from the Turano, Cicolano, Leonessano and the Valley of the Tiber; the Beans of Borbona and of the Colle di Tora, Chianine Meat (IGP), the Red Chestnut of the Cicolano (IGP), the Chestnuts of Antrodoco and the red, white and rose DOC wines of the Sabine Hills, Roman Ricotta (DOP) and white Veal from the Central Apennines (IGP). Local pork producers supply what is probably the best known and best loved speciality of the Reatine region, the porchetta, particular for the way that the aromas are added to the meat, prosciutto ham, lard and mortadella from Amatrice. In addition, visitors to the restaurants of the region can sample the many varieties of hand made fresh pasta: stracci all’uovo, strengozzi, lasagne scandrigliesi and possibly the most famous, the Spaghetti all’Amatriciana. But the product that is most typical and characterises the culture of the area is Sabine Olive Oil. Already known in ancient times, the extra virgin Sabine oil is of such high quality that it has been awarded the mark of DOP (Designated of Protected Origin), a guarantee of geographical origin and the production methods used. |

For lovers of outdoor pursuits and healthy living, the province of Rieti offers many chances to have a go at trekking, water sports, windsurfing, gliding and skiing in the resorts of Mount Terminillo, Mount Tilia in Leonessa, Cittareale and Fiamignano. In addition the therapeutic properties of the region’s waters attract great numbers of visitors to the Thermal Spas and Springs: the Spring of St. Susanna, in the Nature Reserve of the Lungo and Ripasottile lakes, which was declared a national monument in 1977, the Thermal Baths of Cotilia, in Castel Sant’Angelo, the Thermal Baths of Cottorella, situated within a park at the entrance to the city of Rieti, the Lupetta Spring, in Greccio. |
