Parks and Reserves

Regional Park of the Simbruini Mountains

Stretching over around 30,000 hectares and rich in karst phenomena and caves, the Park is covered by a network of pathways, allowing visitors to enjoy the flora and fauna of the area, with rare species of orchid and protected animals such as the wolf, the Marsican brown bear and the eagle owl. The principal waterways are the River Aniene and the River Simbrivio, in whose waters we can find the brown trout, the barbel and the increasingly rare river crayfish, as well as numerous reptiles and amphibians.

Regional Park of the Lucretili Mountains

With a surface area of around 18,000 hectares, the Park is situated between the Tiber Valley and the Aniene Valle, on the southerly spurs of the Sabine Mountains. It still has many wooded areas, including splendid beech woods. There are rare plant species such as the storax (Stirax officinalis – symbol of the Park) and the Sabine Iris. The Park’s Trail Network covers 53 pathways and over 230 km. It is ideal for excursions of varying difficulty and for trekking, and boasts a CAI approved system of signage.

Regional Park of the Castelli Romani

The area extends into the Roman countryside for almost 12,000 hectares. The Park was created in the remains of a volcano known as the Lazio Volcano that was active until 20,000 years ago. Volcanic activity has modelled the appearance of the region today, with mountains such as the impressive Maschio delle Faete (956 m) and Mount Cavo (949 m). Also worth visiting are the volcanic lakes of Albano and Nemi and the enchanting Pratoni del Vivaro.
